Mobile companies to rival RIM

Some of the biggest names in mobile technology are girding for battle against BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) and iPhone creator Apple, reports BusinessWeek.

Later this year, Google and partners that include handset maker Motorola plan devices and features aimed at business users of mobile phones.

Meantime, Nokia and Microsoft are joining forces in their effort to take share in the lucrative market for company-friendly smartphones.

1m Magics sold

The success of the touch-screen smartphone shows Android is gaining traction against the iPhone, BlackBerry, and other competitors, states InformationWeek.

In another sign that the Google-backed Android operating system is picking up steam, HTC says it has sold more than one million units of its Magic smartphone.

The sales figure is quite impressive considering the Android-powered Magic just went on sale in August in the US market as T-Mobile's myTouch 3G.

WiMax not really 4G

Hakan Eriksson, chief technology officer of telecom equipment giant Ericsson, doesn't much care for WiMax, according to Gigaom.

He doesn't even think of it as a real 4G wireless technology, though to be fair, since the International Telecommunication Union hasn't actually set the standard yet, there are no real 4G technologies.

“They are four years late so they have to call it 4G,” Eriksson said of the telecom standards organisation during an interview.
