USAASA, Telecommunications and Postal Services Parliamentary Committee in KZN

Johannesburg, 27 Nov 2014

The Universal Services and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) is currently on a road show with the Parliamentary Committees on Telecommunications and Postal Services, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The purpose of the visit is to demonstrate to members of Parliament that the agency is indeed hard at work to bring about a better life of all people of the country through the rolling out of telecommunications infrastructure.

The agency is mandated by the Telecommunications Act to roll back the frontiers of poverty throughout the country through the broadband roll-out and skills development in under-services areas.

As part of the visit, the Members of Parliament are visiting a skills development project at Durban University of Technology that was funded by the government of South Africa to develop telecommunications and science skills.

The delegation will further move to Msinga, where USAASA deployed a broadband project. Through this project, four schools were identified and equipped with tablets and cellphones to better the learning and education process. All matriculants were given cellphones with connectivity for a period of two years. Furthermore, all educators were provided with tablets to enhance their education process.

USAASA further connected a total number of 27 clinics on the Internet. This is part of the Phakisa Project, announced by President Jacob Zuma earlier this year. Through this connectivity, healthcare workers are able to attend to patients much more efficiently, as opposed to in the past.

The delegation is led by the Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Hounorable Nkensani Kubayi, and USAASA Chairperson, Pumla Radebe.

The South African government remains committed to ending of ills of the past by ending poverty, unemployment and under-development by providing necessary infrastructure where our people live.

USAASA, as an agent of government for change, will continue with the struggle for development in all under-serviced areas of this country.

National development plan in action through broadband roll-out.
