ACSA spends R20m on DIY check-in

The Airports Company of SA (ACSA) has introduced self-service check-in kiosks at four major airports.

The company aims to eventually have 106 Flightcheck kiosks installed at a total cost of almost R20 million. Some 36 kiosks have already been installed at OR Tambo, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth airports.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Kenya Airways are already using the kiosks, which the company says are "secure".

South African Airways, South African Express and Airlink will join the two airlines this week, while other airlines such as Nationwide Airlines are expected to join soon.

The company says, while do-it-yourself check-in is not a new concept, it is one of the first airports companies globally to offer the single platform that can be used by all airlines operating from its airports.

"This means that while ACSA is primarily responsible for having provided the self-service kiosks and the necessary IT infrastructure, participating airlines are running their own individual check-in applications on the Flightcheck kiosks," said a statement.

The kiosks, which look like ATMs and have touch-screens, are monitored 24/7 by on-site maintenance crews and are placed in pairs in case one is out of order.
