Korea's Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the SA Department of Communications (DOC) have agreed to establish an ICT Co-operation Centre (ICTCC) in SA.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the two governments would formalise the Korean government's commitment to contribute R8 million over the next three years towards the establishment of the ITCC, said Professor Ndawonde, a journalist with the DOC.

The centre will deal mainly with the advancement of ICTs in SA through the exchange of ideas and experiences with Korea, he said. Areas covered include ICT research and development, e-skills training, the implementation of e-government, and aims to help solve the ICT skills shortage currently facing SA.

Dr Harold Wesso, acting CEO of the Meraka e-Skills Institute, said the partnership would be a major boost for the knowledge and human resources operations of the institute. The institute will have a responsibility for the project identification as well as project design, and it will focus on e-skills development in both the public and private sectors and the South African society at large, he added.
