Impi Linux 2 to be launched at open source Installfest

Johannesburg, 26 Aug 2004

Impi Linux, a local open source software project geared towards promoting the widespread adoption of open source software in Africa, will launch Impi Linux 2 at the Open Source Installfest at Dimension Data Campus, Bryanston, on International Software Freedom Day, 28 August 2004.

Impi Linux 2 is the next generation of original South African-developed open source software. Unlike the first release of Impi Linux 1, this latest version is not based on any existing Linux distributions such as Red Hat and Debian. It is purely South African-developed open source technology.

"With Impi Linux 2, SA will have a completely local alternative to Linux, the open source operating system that has steadily become a serious challenger to Microsoft offerings," says Ross Addis, technology consultant at MIP Holdings, chairman of the Gauteng Linux User Group and the driving force behind Impi Linux.

Impi Linux 2 is a highly stable, virus-free, cost-effective business operating system that anyone will be able to download, use, and modify on condition that they comply with the underlying licensing conditions.

This Impi release provides a complete working desktop and has additional server components. It is bundled with the latest stable release of Open Office, and the graphical desktop environment KDE, which enables the support of many local and international languages.

All management and configuration systems in this release are built on the Cubit web interface technologies. Impi 2 is a significant improvement over the original Impi Linux 1.

* From 28 August, Impi Linux 2 will be available for download at www.impi.org.za.
