Local companies should devote more attention to social media, says Mike Sharman, owner of Retroviral Communications.

Key insight and strategy development is the most important step in determining success or failure in social media implementations.

This is according to Mike Sharman, owner of online communications agency Retroviral Communications. "Social media can't fix a broken product or service," says Sharman, adding that identifying how digital communication can support business objectives is crucial. "Tactics can be determined once you know what you are trying to achieve."

Sharman will be chairing the third annual ITWeb Social Media Summit taking place in Johannesburg in June this year.

He believes local companies should concentrate more on finding out how to capitalise on social media. "It's becoming a necessity as more consumers move online, either via desktop or mobile. Cheaper access to the internet requires a greater understanding of consumer behaviour in the digital world."

Sharman will also lead a panel discussion at the ITWeb Social Media Summit 2014, where delegates can quiz him and other local social media influencers on how to better position their own initiatives in this space.

The keynote speaker at the event is Mike Saunders, CEO at Digitlab, international speaker, and expert in social media, digital customer experiences and enterprise social business. Saunders will explore how business can reinvent itself to successfully transition to a new world of social technology and social media.
