SA online shopping results released

Johannesburg, 13 Nov 2006

Six months after the shopping search engine Jump Shopping went live, the first online shopping product results are out.

Technology products top the lists in all areas. The search for iPod topped the ranks week after week, and since the launch of Xbox 360, the race for the top search word is still on.

"The number of searches on Jump Shopping increased month by month. With 80% of traffic on Jump Shopping generated by Google and search engine rankings, we are more than optimistic that 2007 will be an excellent year for Jump Shopping," says Albert Bredenhann, co-owner of Jump Shopping.

The Jump Shopping catalogue is populated with products and product information from various online stores in SA on a daily basis, enabling consumers to search for the best price. In the last 30 days, Jump Shopping had more than 1.2 million page views from approximately 50 000 unique visitors.

Top search words

The race between iPod and Xbox is on par with Google Trends for the same two words.

1. iPod
2. Xbox 360
3. GPS
4. DVD
5. PSP
6. Notebook
7. Watches
8. Memory
9. LCD
10. Plasma TV

Even though the list is only for the top 10 words, one of the biggest climbers on the list in the last six months is the word "baby", which could be in the top 10 with the next results. It is clear mothers are making use of online shopping more than before, says Jump Shopping.

Most viewed products

South African consumers do not only search for specific words but browse through categories in the search of particular products. The most popular products on Jump Shopping are cellphones.

1. I-Mate K-Jam
2. Nokia N73
3. Chelino Travel Systems
4. LG Chocolate Phone
5. Sony Ericsson K800i
6. Sony CyberShot DSC H2
7. Garmap Africa Road Atlas
8. Acer TravelMate
9. Need for Speed PC Game
10. Acer 17 LCD Monitor

Top viewed brands

Jump Shopping has more than 3 500 brands listed from over 55 high-end online stores. Samsung topped the list for the first six months and, according to Bredenhann, is the number one online shopping brand in SA.

1. Samsung
2. Toshiba
3. Avent
4. HP
5. Garmin
6. ATI
7. BenQ
8. Adobe
9. LG
10. Nokia

The number of stores listed in the online shopping directory is close to 600 and, according to Bredenhann, the list is not complete as all online stores are not accounted for. The total number of products in the catalogue grows on a daily basis as more online stores join the Jump Merchant programme which generates leads to the stores.
