Communications minister Yunus Carrim launched the department's 2010 Fifa World Cup legacy project yesterday in a bid to improve e-connectivity across SA's schools.
The project, which uses a surplus amount of R374 million from the soccer tournament, aims to connect 1 650 public schools across the country.
Telkom received a R950 million government guarantee to build an access network for stadiums but it was more efficient than expected, leading to a surplus which the DOC planned to use as part of the legacy project.
Although the project stems from the World Cup, says Carrim, it is now located in terms of 'SA Connect' ? government's broadband plan.
Carrim said 688 schools have been connected since the DOC published SA Connect in December last year.
There are more than 8 000 schools that have been connected through departmental and industry initiatives.
Speaking at a launch event in Botshabelo in the Free State, Carrim said there are training programmes for teachers and learners to use computers effectively.
"School connectivity should be a massive national project in the interests of our country," he noted.
