The Cisco Global IT Survey polled 1 500 IT managers and executives about their perceptions of tablets in the enterprise. Conducted by Redshift Research and commissioned by Cisco, the survey included the US, Canada, France, Germany and Spain. These are some of the key findings:
1. Globally, IT departments report employees place one tablet request for every three smartphone requests today.
2. In both the US and France, 21% of the workforce requests a tablet.
3. In Spain, 90% of IT managers believe tablets will gain popularity in the next two years.
4. Seventy-five percent of US IT managers said new rules must be established around security and device usage.
5. Close to half (48%) of all IT managers surveyed say access to company applications should be restricted for all employees.
6. IT managers universally agree that custom tablet applications would benefit their business.
7. Most wanted features (by three-quarters of IT managers) are e-mail and document sharing.
8. Globally, 48% of IT managers said their companies would never authorise employees to bring their own devices.
9. Fifty-seven percent of IT managers agreed that employees use their own devices without consent.
10. Access to company servers and lost/stolen devices were identified as the biggest problems with the BYOD phenomena.
