The University of South Africa (UNISA), the world`s sixth largest distance learning university with over 130,000 students, has invested in a XeroxDocuTech 6180 with DigiPath, bringing their fleet of DocuTechs to three network production publishers.
The university invested in Xerox technology to alleviate the extreme pressure on the its existing print system (almost 1,500 tons of paper run through it each year), to reduce costs and to improve print production and flexibility.
The university`s new Xerox DocuTech system has already:
Delivered a 65 percent improvement in print production time (no preparing camera-ready art, shooting and stripping films, producing plates, etc.
Delivered an estimated print cost saving of approximately 55 percent
Increased flexibility - the university is now able to choose between offset litho or digital printing, it can print on demand (and so reduce wastage from over-printing and eradicate under-printing and storage problems) and eliminated pre-proofing as it is now done electronically
Consolidated the IT department`s printing into the Central Print Facility. The DocuTech 6180 forms the backbone of the facility because of its variable data printing capabilities. All of the one-to-one correspondence gets printed here, for example exam results, statements etc.
Benefited 130,000 students as guides and course material can be regularly updated - so revisions and up to the minute information can be added as and when necessary. For example some of the university`s study guides are now updated every year, rather than every three years as in the past.
"The new Xerox system enables us to make massive cost savings because the production process is far less labour, materials and cost-intensive than traditional methods," says UNISA spokesman, Hein du Toit. "UNISA operates world study standards and the Xerox DocuTechs go a long way towards ensuring that we are able to meet and improve these high standards."
