16 days of cellular activism

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign is an annual, UN-endorsed, awareness-raising campaign that begins on 25 November each year and runs through till 10 December.

The campaign is widely supported by public and private sector bodies and will be extensively promoted by press, radio, billboards, taxi ads and TV media campaigns as well as direct education and special events. It spans the International Days for: No Violence Against Women (25 November), HIV and AIDS (1 December), People Living with Disability (3 December) and Human Rights Day (10 December).

An important aspect of the campaign is raising funds via the Foundation for Human Rights for charities, NGOs and CBOs working in the field of women and child abuse and assisting the victims of violence. One of the fund-raising elements is an SMS campaign which is supported by all three mobile service providers, each of which will waive the usual administrative charges. Participants will be asked to SMS the words "16 DAYS" to 31616 at a cost of R5 per SMS.

The SMS service will be implemented and managed by Leaf Wireless free of charge. Quinton Leigh, Managing Director of Leaf Wireless, says: "Leaf Wireless has many years of experience in implementing and running high-volume SMS systems, and we are very happy to be able to lend our expertise to such a worthy cause. The campaign is being supported by a number of major businesses in the private sector, such as MTN, MNet, FNB, Absa, Woolworths and many others of equal stature, and we are honoured to be able to work with such highly regarded partners on this project."

Other business partners will be supplying prizes for the campaign.

Leigh commented further: "Mobile technology has evolved dramatically since its introduction 10 years ago. We have seen SMS solutions in many guises over the years, being used to open up new channels of communication, to create new points of contact with customers. The 16 Days SMS campaign is a superb illustration of how to exploit the strengths of the technology. It`s a simple, immediate way for individuals to become involved and make a small difference, and to combine thousands of small differences to make a big difference."
