World Cup fans can now get the latest scores and other updates on their mobile phones, thanks to a special extension of the official World Cup 2010 Web site.

The new mobile platform, m.sa2010.gov.za, put together by Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), gives fans access to match results and news, as well as a virtual encyclopaedia of background information.

The organisation says that besides the latest match news, users can also find out about Fifa fan fests and public viewing areas, park and ride/walk locations, and general host city and stadium information on the mobile site.

GCIS spokesperson Themba Maseko says the mobisite ensures anyone with a Web-enabled phone can access location-relevant information about the World Cup directly from their cellphones, from wherever they are in SA, the continent, or the world.

He assures busy soccer fans that the mobisite will be “continually updated, ensuring fans are kept up to speed with all the latest World Cup news as well as being able to explore the South African government's involvement in the first Fifa World Cup on African soil.”

For those without smartphones, the site can also be accessed by sending an SMS with the keyword 2010 to the number 34747 or by dialling *120*12010# from anywhere in SA, Maseko says.

According to the GCIS, use of the site is free, but the relevant charges will be applied by the user's cellphone network. In SA, the cost is 20c per 20 seconds on the USSD menu, with the SMS service costing a flat R2.
