2013 deadline for NZ digital switch-over

The New Zealand Government has confirmed the time-frame for the switch-off of analogue broadcasts in the country, aimed to be completed by the end of 2013, writes The Spy Report.

Broadcasting minister Jonathan Coleman made the assertion, confirming a four-stage process beginning in Hawke's Bay and the West Coast of the South Island in September 2012 and finishing on the North Island in December 2013.

According to NZ Herald, Coleman said the move was the biggest change to television broadcasting since the introduction of colour.

"We're planning for the start of a fully digital TV age where New Zealanders can enjoy better pictures and sound, more choice and benefits such as onscreen television guides," Coleman said.

RadioNZ reports that Coleman said nearly eight out of 10 New Zealanders are already watching digital television, either through Freeview, Sky or TelstraClear.

He said other viewers do not need to buy a new television to go digital, but may need to buy a set-top box and possibly a new aerial or satellite dish, depending on what equipment they have and where they live.
