2013 HP Discover Barcelona - cutting edge of big data

Johannesburg, 06 Jan 2013

Insight Driven Enterprise, a South African HP Vertica Partner, attended the two-day symposium hosted in Barcelona, Spain from 10-12 December 2013, which hosted more then 11 000 visitors from 90 countries with 850 speakers.

Tracks included:

* Application transformation, big data, cloud, converged infrastructure, enterprise services, HP IT: best practice and lessons learnt, mobility, printing and personal systems, security and risk management, software.

HP made a big move on big data with the release of the HAVEn big data platform. The market has the final say; however, the brute force of the HP Vertica engine combined with the colossal Autonomy IDOL services has placed HP at a distinct advantage. HP Vertica is the real-time analytic database and HP Autonomy is in essence a connector kit to some interesting data sources, such as:

* Human information (social media, etc);
* Image recognition; and
* Machine data.

Worthwhile talks included:

* HP HAVEn big data in action: how connected intelligence can streamline your business and increase profitability;
* Intel: technologies for the next big data revolution;
* From click streams to touch streams - revolutionising user experience with big data analytics;
* Autonomy unlocks the value of human information;
* News from HP Autonomy - analytics solutions for unstructured, human information;
* Announcing HP Earth Insights: big data analysis for the world's rainforests;
* HP Vertica Distributed R: advanced analytics for big data;
* Simplifying exploration and analysis of emerging data types; and
* HP Labs Unified Analytics Platform: expanding business intelligence to big data analytics.

The HAVEn big data platform released by HP is directly targeting the growing ecosystem around utilising structured and unstructured information. HP's strategy is to harness the power of big data, including HP's latest innovations with HAVEn (Hadoop, Autonomy, Vertica, Enterprise Security and n-apps), the industry's first comprehensive, scalable, open and secure platform for big data.

The big message is to stay ahead of the competition, become more profitable, and improve your operations, increasingly requires a real-time fusion and analysis of large volumes of structured machine (sensors, embedded software, etc), unstructured-human (social media, documents, audio, video, etc) and traditional transactional data.
