400 000 downloads of Java Application Server SDK

Johannesburg, 16 Mar 2004

Java Web services development is on the up, according to Sun Microsystems. The company says it has recorded 400 000 downloads of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.4 Software Development Kit (SDK).

"This accomplishment for the Java technology community is marked with licensing the J2EE Specification and Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) to ObjectWeb under Sun's new licence terms which are friendly to non-profit and open source projects," says Sean O'Hare, Java systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.

The ObjectWeb Consortium is demonstrating its commitment to the compatible J2EE technology industry by joining the Apache Software Foundation and the JBoss Group. These open source organisations were the first to license the J2EE 1.4 platform specification and CTS.

The ObjectWeb Consortium is taking advantage of the new open source licence terms by licensing the J2EE platform specification and CTS that Sun is making available for non-profit and open source projects. This will bring the benefits of Java technology compatibility to the organisation's open source community for development and deployment through its JOnAS Application Server.

"Taken together with the Apache Software Foundation and JBoss Group, this cements the position of the J2EE platform as the premier platform for Web services in the open source community, just as it has become so widely adopted in the rest of the middleware market," concludes O'Hare.
