$8bn invested in Africa's ICT

The secretary-general of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Hamadoun Toure, reveals that $8 billion was invested in the development of ICT in Africa in 2008, states All Africa.com.

Toure disclosed this at a world press conference to mark the end of the African Telecom Development Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria.

He says more than 30 million people in Africa now have access to the Web, adding that between 2000 and 2008, Nigeria alone has added 11 million new Internet users.

Ericsson backs Botswana Innovation Hub

The newly-formed Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) has received a major boost from Ericsson, reports Mmegi Online.

Ericsson, which is involved in the government's Nteletsa programme to take telecommunication services to rural outreaches, provides Botswana's three mobile service providers with base station and software equipment.

BIH is a concept crafted a few years ago by the Botswana Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology with a view to attracting researchers and investors for technological advancement of the country.

Essar to buy out Warid Telecom

Negotiations between the Dhabi Group, the owners of Warid Telecom Uganda, and the Essar Group on a possible takeover of Warid telecom operations in Uganda are in advanced stages, says Monitor Online.

The head of products and services for Warid Telecom Uganda, Shine George, disclosed that in three months negotiations will be concluded, with Essar Group taking control of Warid Uganda among many other African telecommunications assets of the Dhabi Group.

Warid officials in Kampala are optimistic that the takeover will enable innovation to develop new telecommunications products for different subscribers.
