Following Telkom's cellular arm, 8ta's, announcement of reduced rates of up to 25% for its once-off and postpaid Internet packages and a once-off 120GB bundle, the operator today launched five Internet Saver data packages.

8ta says the Internet Saver plan, a “hybrid” offer, is a data contract package with a monthly recurring data bundle that also behaves like a prepaid package once the recurring data bundle is depleted.

The Internet Saver packages are available on a 12- or 24-month contract, which includes a free modem. Users can also opt for a month-to-month contract, but a modem is not included in this.

Amith Maharaj, managing executive of Telkom Mobile, says this latest addition to 8ta's data offerings is targeted at individuals who want to control their Internet spending.

“The package is also well suited for businesses that only want the responsibility of paying for in-bundle usage, leaving the out-of-bundle usage costs to the employees.”

Subscribers pay for the subscriptions upfront with a bundle validity of the current month. Any extra top-up data packages purchased are charged out of their prepaid wallets and are valid for up to two months. Subscribers also have the option to continue at an out-of-bundle rate of R1 per MB until the allocated data gets replenished at the beginning of the month.

Subscribers can manage online data usage via 8ta's self-service Web portal, or the USSD functionality on their devices, says the operator. “[They can use this platform] to check their balances, top up bundles and to ensure that the bundles are optimally managed.”

The Internet Saver packages are available on both the 8ta network, as well as on the operator's roaming MTN's network.
