A first-of-its-kind solution for optimising network printing in remote offices

Johannesburg, 28 Apr 2000

Tarsus Technologies, the distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies, has announced that the HP JetDirect 4000 Print Appliance for Print Spooling and Queue Management will be available in the US from 1 May 2000.

Traci Maynard, product manager for Hewlett-Packard at Tarsus Technologies, says, "This is the first in a series of new announcements from HP which will see the vendor move away from offering 'pure product` and towards offering dedicated networked solutions for various services, such as printing."

The HP JetDirect 4000 Print Appliance hosts print queues and localizes print traffic to streamline printing. It provides file-server independent print spooling which increases file-server , and enables browser-based queue and print job management from anywhere on a 10/100 Ethernet network.

Maynard continues, "HP views print appliances as the platform for moving printing from a LAN-centric focus to an -centric focus. The JetDirect 4000 print appliance provides immediate benefits to the IT manager by bringing appliance-like simplicity to the printing infrastructure."

She adds, "Printing is faster and more reliable. Print spooling is easier to manage from anywhere on the network, locally or remotely and the workload of the general-purpose server is greatly reduced, freeing it to focus on other mission-critical responsibilities such as file sharing, Web serving and application serving."

Supported Operating Systems include Microsoft Windows `95, Microsoft Windows `98, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000 running on TCP/IP networks.
