A splash of colour for Presario

Johannesburg, 02 Aug 2000

Compaq has launched a slew of new-look Presario notebooks and desktops aimed at the consumer market. Incredible Connection has exclusive rights to resell the consumer range.

The new-look Presario range has a distinct Apple Mac feel, with a translucent body and personalised colours making the Presario 1400 notebook look particularly iBook-esque. The desktops also have a range of swappable colours for the case, keyboard and speakers, although these look a little more like the Daewoo range than the Apple G-series.

Incredible Connection will stock the new range as of this weekend, and says it has already had requests for the high-end Presario 7000 PCs. It sees Compaq as having a very strong brand within the South African consumer market.

The machines ship with Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Word 2000, MS Works 2000, Ringcentral fax , Media Ring voice over IP software, and McAfee anti-virus software. Windows Millennium Edition is expected to ship on the Presario in October or November.

All machines come with the PowerQuest backup software, a Compaq quick restore CD, and Compaq diagnosis to help users sort out software and hardware faults.

The new PC ranges on offer are the Presario 5000 and 7000, with two configurations slotting under the 5000 banner. The 5000 Intel Celeron version is priced at R10 999, while the high-end 7000 - with PIII 800MHz, DVD player, CD-RW, a 32MB Nvidia TNT2 graphics card, a modem, a card, USB and firewire - will cost R15 499.

The high-end Presario 1800 offers SOHO customers a 15-inch display, a PIII 650MHz processor, 128MB RAM, a DVD drive, and all the other bells and whistles associated with a desktop replacement. The 1800 costs R22 999.

In the middle of the portable range is the 1600 series, with a 650MHz PIII CPU and 64MB RAM.

The portable entry level machines - the 1200 series - start at R10 499, and do not have the colour options of the 1400 range. The colourful 1400s start at R12 499, and come with a 566MHz Intel Celeron processor, 64MB RAM, a 6GB drive and a CD-ROM.
