A tablet that`s no bitter pill

Johannesburg, 02 Dec 2003

Although Tablet PCs only make up a small percentage of the total computer market, increased productivity and ease of use is making these mobile computers must-have technologies for workers who need IT solutions that work with and for them.

While Acer shared the top spot for Tablet PCs shipped in Q1 2003, the company is set to take first place with the launch of the new Acer TravelMate C300 Convertible Tablet PC (TMC300). The TMC300 is setting the international standard and taking these portables to new levels of reliability, convenience and performance.

"Built on a solid foundation of an Intel Centrino P-M 1.6GHz processor, up to 64MB of video memory, 512MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive, the TMC300 delivers power, convenience and versatility that can be used as a notebook or a tablet," says Traci Maynard, Acer product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

Integrated wireless networking allows users to move through factories or warehouses while connected to the corporate network, as well as log in while out of the office in areas of WLAN coverage. Additionally, the Bluetooth connectivity allows users to link in via their cellular phones or connect to other Bluetooth-enabled devices without unnecessary cables and other distractions.

"And not forgetting traditional computing needs, the TMC300 also has an integrated Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, ensuring it can handle all networks running from 10Mbps to 1000Mbps," adds Maynard. "The real fanfare, however, is the battery life. A standard seven-hour battery life (double the traditional span of laptop batteries) can be expanded to 13 hours by hot-swapping the DVD/CD-RW optical drive with a second battery. No other laptop can match this accomplishment."

An additional feature of the display is the Acer light sensor built into the screen`s housing. The sensor measures ambient light and adjusts the screen`s brightness to the best level. It also saves the settings for the next time the same light conditions apply. Of course, manual adjustments are still possible to ensure the most comfortable usage.

The TMC300`s sturdy design is built for travel. All ports are covered with flaps to keep dirt and dust out and Acer`s unique Disc Anti-Shock Protection (DASP) cushions the hard drive when it gets knocked about on the road.

Potential customers the TMC300 is targeted at include current notebook users who need to replace their existing equipment with the latest technology in order to maximise productivity; as well as vertical markets such as the legal, medical, financial, manufacturing and design industries.
