A typical spread trading day

Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2002

The traders at Global Trader 247 cover hundreds of investors, execute close to a thousand trades a day and operate fifteen hours a day, five days a week, online, over the phone or through their world class-trading platform. Their management system is the same as that used by leading around the world and forms the cornerstone of their business.

Spread trading is big business - the South African industry is already worth in excess of R150 million a month, in terms of underlying asset value traded.

Mark Wurr, Head Trader at Global Trader 247 says: "This is a job for an insomniac multi-tasker, who will work from 7:30am until 10:30pm, Monday to Friday. A typical day starts by reviewing overnight movements in all the markets - not a trivial job when you think there are over fifty instruments covering all the major international and local indices, currencies, South African interest rates and equities."

Bradley Leather, Global Trader 247 Head Sales Trader, says: "The morning bell at 8:00 am signals that its time for the traders to turn their attention to the opening of the Global Trader 247 instruments. From then on in it`s a frenetic pace with attention flickering between news feeds, satellite channels, internet trade alerts, market monitoring, charting, over the phone market making, client queries and between all this ensuring that Global Trader 247 hedges out all of the risk resulting out of client transactions."

The closing bell in the United States brings an end to the trading day - but for Brad and Mark its time to reflect on the day, analyse the movements, sign off on the hedges and finally start researching the announcements of tomorrow - because tomorrow is another trading day.

Clients range from `R1 raiders` to `R14 000 market movers` but no matter what your risk size you`ll get the same service from the traders.

Their desks are minefields of mice, screens, telephones, newspapers and magazines. Their minds are conundrums of market information and statistics, and they speak a language only they understand.

What`s more is that this is only the start, with expected growth into other international markets and Global Trader 247 instruments increasing at an exponential rate, these traders have their work cut out for them.

If your want to get a taste of this lifestyle, then why not give their simulated environment a try. It is real markets spread trading, but with play-play money and it`s a small taste of what it`s like to be a spread trader.
