Cape Town - The way we communicate today compared to the way we communicated two years, five years, 10 years and 15 years ago is entirely different. Remember the bricks we had as mobile devices back then? What about the screeching sound your 56K modems used to make? Can you imagine trying to explain that to your children? They will look at you as if you have gone absolutely mad while you try to imitate those sound effects.
Yes, the world has changed, and the way we communicate has changed. Having the ability to pick up and dial is no longer sufficient. We need Facebook, Twitter, Skype, video calling, Bebo, LinkedIn, SMS, MMS, WhatsApp, Viber, Mxit and Google, to mention only a few.
“We want to know everything, all the time and at the time it happens,” says Dominic Sardinha, owner of Abacus Telecomm. “Our desire and need for instant information is insatiable and will continue to increase as technologies evolve to keep up with the ever-changing pace that is telecommunications.”
With this in mind, Abacus Telecomm has embarked on a data mission in 2012 in order to increase its market share of data subscribers.
“We believe that ultimately data will supersede traditional voice dialling as the preferred method of communications,” continues Dominic, “purely due to the affordability of data nowadays. 3G data costs have plummeted from R2 per MB to as little as 8c per MB, and in certain scenarios where APNs are applicable, even cheaper.
“We can run our voice, our pictures, our videos and our memories all over data nowadays. While commercial enterprises will still require voice communications either via VOIP or traditional PSTN providers, it is and will be the end-consumer who will drive data usage up,” says Sardinha. “And to this end we intend to target the domestic market with much aggression and vigour and increase our market share in this category.”
