In a drive to manage and ensure data protection for the corporate WAN, Amalgamated Beverage Industries Limited (ABI), one of the major bottlers of Coca-Cola in South Africa, has recently standardised on Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT and NovellNetWare.
Larry Cook, ABI PC LAN Manager for the Northern Region, says the company replaced their previous backup solution with Seagate Backup Exec because of its extensive support for Novell`s NDS (Novell Directory Services).
"Our requirements are fairly specific. Our network includes some 750 workstations and 35 servers, running a combination of Windows NT and Novell. Seagate Backup Exec, with its IDR (Intelligent Disaster Recovery) features enables us to have a server up and running in under an hour."
Dave Stewart, Director of Easy Access, a TeamExec partner for Seagate Software, says the company has consulted on the ABI network since day one, and recognised that ABI needed to implement a disaster recovery solution that was fully compatible with the existing network configuration.
"At present, Seagate Backup Exec is the only backup suite that is Novell NetWare 5 certified. We chose Seagate Backup Exec because we found that the previous backup application was inefficient at backing up certain operating system settings," says Stewart.
The company network has almost doubled in size over the last year and it became necessary to implement a comprehensive backup plan. ABI backs up about 40GB of data daily between their Johannesburg and Durban offices. "Using Seagate Backup Exec, we were able to restore an Exchange server, including all the users and their mail in less than an hour ," comments Cook.
Using features such as Seagate Working Set Backup, administrators can restore and bring systems online faster. Integrating the Seagate Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option further automates restoration and gets the server back online in the event of a failure.

Seagate Backup Exec has full support for Novell Storage Service, Novell SMS, Target Service Agents and Novell NDS, and provides data protection no matter how the network is configured.
