Absa, Bytes Specialised Solutions turn energy crisis into an opportunity

Johannesburg, 22 Apr 2008

Absa and Bytes Specialised Solutions (Bytes SS) have jointly developed an uninterrupted power supply unit which guarantees power supply to ATMs during power outages.

An initial roll-out of approximately 1 900 units to its ATM installed base throughout South Africa has commenced.

The power shortages and outages experienced throughout South Africa is significantly impacting corporate South Africa as companies struggle to provide customers with the required service levels during this time.

The ATM environment is equally impacted and as a result, Absa was seeking solutions.

In 2007, Absa and Bytes SS embarked on an extensive pilot phase to find a solution which will resolve the power challenges experienced. They, together with key stakeholders such as Tedelex and Battery Technologies, were primarily responsible for designing and producing this solution.

Allen Mahadeo, Absa General Manager: Self Service Channel and Distribution, said: "We are very excited about this initiative. I hope that this is an example of how, through innovation and smart partnerships, we can overcome some of our challenges.

"Our number one priority is our customers and our promise to them is accessibility and convenience. This commitment remains even during power outages," concluded Mahadeo.

Derick Deyzel, Divisional Executive Retail ATM Division of Bytes SS, said: "Bytes SS does not simply sell and install ATMs but we also aim to provide additional value add to our clients both strategically and operationally and this initiative with our partner Absa is a prime example of such an initiative."
