Accenture names skills development chief

Johannesburg, 10 Jun 2002

IT company Accenture has named Pfungwa Serima as the head of its new skills development arm, Accenture Solutions, which supplies clients with specialised IT skills for specific projects.

Accenture Solutions was launched late last year, to identify, train and mentor previously disadvantaged individuals (PDIs) wanting to enter the IT sector. The candidates are then outsourced to Accenture clients, where the clients benefit from having skilled staff on specific projects and the candidates benefit by acquiring project experience.

Accenture director Pierre Dalton says around 50 candidates have been trained and assigned to projects in eight different companies so far. This internship allows Accenture to recover the costs of training, and provides the company with a skills base from which to select permanent staff.

Accenture Solutions` main focus is in the area of Microsoft software solutions, SAP, Oracle and MVS/CICS, while an offshore development facility is envisaged within the next year.

Serima says: "As a new organisation, we are serious about training people from previously disadvantaged communities and releasing them to the market. We have already begun a learnership programme in which candidates are trained at enormous expense. We see this as our corporate social investment into building a brighter future for talented PDIs."
