Accord Technologies, distributor of prepaid cellular vouchers, has won a contract to supply Telkom with prepaid vouchers for landlines.
PacTel, an Accord subsidiary, has established a new joint venture company, Wireless Courier Services (WCS) with Iziko - a company owned by Khulani Holdings and the National Empowerment Trust - to handle distribution of high-value cards and vouchers such as Telkom prepaid vouchers and possibly also lottery cards.
The prepaid Telkom service works in a similar way to that of the cellular networks: prepaid subscribers purchase recharge vouchers from Shoprite Checkers, Spar, Engen, the Post Office or a WCS dealer. The voucher pin number is then keyed into their landline telephone. The amount of telephone talk-time paid for is then credited to the subscriber`s account.
Accord director and WCS joint MD, Henri Hasson, says Telkom`s new prepaid service has attracted over 100 000 subscribers in the few weeks since its launch.
"We are already experiencing enormous demand for the prepaid vouchers and we expect this to grow exponentially as word of the service spreads. At present, prepaid subscribers account for some 85% of the cellular market," says Hasson. WCS expects this trend to be followed in the landline market.
