Acer introduces Altos S300

Johannesburg, 13 Jun 2002

With the release of Acer`sAltos S300, a 19-inch rackmount storage offering a terabyte of storage, corporate users will be able to control escalating storage needs.

"With more than one terabyte of information being transferred across the Internet on a daily basis, ISPs, ASPs and hosting providers are hard pressed to provide the storage capacity required by the volume of data passing through their servers," says Hilton Haefele, networking product manager at Acer. "The Altos S300 addresses these, as well as other storage issues, offering storage in a compact form factor."

This system offers the latest generation of HDDs that support up to 15Krpm, meaning that users need not be concerned with the upgrading of outdated disks. Additionally the product offers a quick change of hot-swappable power supplies without impacting on a user`s business or efficiency.

The product`s modular design allows users to upgrade and configure without the expense of replacing non-obsolete parts, while offering redundancy. According to Haefele, SCSI is still the primary choice for cost efficient, high bandwidth throughput. "The Altos` dual SCSI channels offer transfer speeds of up to 640MB per second. Channels are selectable by rear-accessible jumper which simplifies the changing of settings."

Given the importance of cooling in rackmounted storage, Acer has patented the Advanced Cooling Module to ensure airflow to protect components and guarantee system stability.

Used in conjunction with other Acer servers, the Altos S300 offers users the ability to cluster servers and storage extensions to achieve better load balancing and data throughput. "The system is scalable and there is no need to be concerned with platform and software compatibility issues. Each HDD in the Altos S300 holds up to 73GB of data."
