Acer launches new range of storage solutions

Johannesburg, 20 Jul 2001

Leading global IT vendor, Acer, has introduced two new storage ranges that meet the growing need for scaleable, high performance and secure data storage solutions within the South African SME market.

The AccuRAID storage series is a low cost solution for small businesses with five to 50 users needing storage to backup data and create more space on their servers. The AccuSTOR range meets the needs of medium-sized enterprises, requiring a high-end product to run large applications such as ERP, databases and warehousing.

Hilton Haefele, networking product manager at Acer, says: "Hard drive capacity requirements in small companies are growing by 120% a month. Most small businesses address this problem by purchasing a new server. This is an expensive mistake with long-term cost implications, as a new server provides only a fraction of the amount of space of a storage solution, with a part of the purchase price going towards unnecessary processing power.

"All the Acer storage products have been designed to grow easily with a business`s needs," says Haefele. "The AccuRAID series is equipped to allow greater data capacities through LVD daisy-chained expansion."

With security a priority in data management, the AccuRAID series supports RAID level 0,1,3,5 and 0+1 for 24-hour data protection. Keylocks are provided for each hard drive tray with an additional master lock on the front panel protecting it from tampering, and a hot spare disk acts as a standby to automatically replace a failed disk in case of disk error.

"These new storage solutions complement Acer`s end-to-end networking solution and are easily integrated with all other product offerings," says Haefele.

The AccuRAID range consists of three offerings:

  • .         The AccuRAID 860 is a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) unit that offers an affordable, entry-level storage solution, providing a starting point from which businesses can grow. It has six hard drives, an Intel i960 RD RAID engine, 64-128MB cache support and an Ultra-Wide SCSI host interface (host transfer rate of 40MBps.

  • .         The AccuRAID 890 offers the ability to increase data management with this DAS (Direct Attached Storage) unit. It offers six hard drives, an Intel i960 RN 64-bit RISC processor, 64-128MB cache support and an Ultra2Wide SCSI host interface (host transfer rate of 80MBps).

  • .         The AccuRAID 960 meets the demand for round the clock online communications and operations. Also a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) unit, it offers eight hard drives, an Intel i960 RN 64 bit RISC processor, 64-128MB cache support, Ultra2Wide SCSI host interface and built-in 500VA UPS.

  • The AccuSTOR range consists of: The S1000, a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) unit, offers an Ultra-160 SCSI interface, transfer rates of 160MBps. Two models are available: JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) with 15 hard drives or a UII/U160 RAID controller which holds 10 hard drives. Hard disk drives range from 9GB/18GB/36.4GB with a capacity of 364GB to 546GB.

The NS100 offers multi-platform file sharing options. As a NAS (network area storage) solution it is easy to install by plugging into the network point and uses network speed as opposed to server speed to get data. It holds four 30 or 60GB hard drives, providing a total of 120/240GB storage.
