Acer in South Africa took to the road this month (Oct) to showcase some of the latest ground-breaking PC technologies from the Acer Group, the world`s third largest PC manufacturer.
Among the new products making their SA debut in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were the world`s first Bluetooth-enabled notebook, a slimline all-in-one PC and an ultra-thin rack-mounted server.
"Lean, mean and functionally-rich - that`s where Acer is currently taking computing at all levels, whether you`re looking at notebooks, PCs or servers," says Brian Bogaard, general manager, Acer in Africa.
The briefings were open to computer dealers, value-added resellers and interested members of the public.
One of the highlights of the Acer Roadshow was the launch of the Acer TravelMate 350, the world`s first truly "connect-anywhere" mobile PC. It is a notebook designed for the 21st Century. Apart from ready for wireless data exchange, it features LAN and modem connectivity and includes an unique system, which ensures maximum access security.
Another notebook featured was the Acer TravelMate 200, which meets the market call for a high quality, affordable portable PC with the bells and whistles of more expensive systems.
When it comes to good looks, power and compactness, Acer`s new Veriton FP2 desktop PC is unrivalled. All components are built into a slimline LCD monitor-based PC which comes in classy blue, charcoal and silver tones making it ideal for environments where image and space are important.
Other good-looking, functionally rich innovations in this range are the Veriton 5100 standard desktop and 7100 mini tower PCs. Beneath their sophisticated, colour-coordinated and ergonomic designs are powerful computers designed for the most demanding professional, graphics and audio-intensive applications.
On the server side, Acer`s `thin is in` approach was evidenced by the new, AcerAltos 1200LP, which packs all its power and functionality within its 1U (1.75-inch) ultra thin casing. Up to 40 Altos 1200LP servers can be housed in a single 19-inch rack mount cabinet not much bigger than a standard filing cabinet. The standalone equivalent would fill a very large room.
Standalones also have a place in today`s network environment. Roadshow visitors were given an opportunity to see the new Acer Altos 1200 midrange server and, for less intensive needs, the ready-to run, very affordable, Acer Altos SA 50 application server, which has been optimised for the small business and corporate workgroups.
At the other end of the scale is Acer`s new 4-way Pentium III Xeon-based, enterprise class server, the Altos 22000. This incorporates "always on" features traditionally found only in mainframe environments, such as hot-swappable PCI slots, storage, power supplies and fans as well as ChipKill memory, which provides protection from both single and multi-bit errors.
