Acer urges green responsibility

Johannesburg, 29 Sep 2009

Acer SA has called for PC manufacturers to become more responsible in monitoring their environmental impact.

The PC vendor says enterprises, end-users, and vendors need to take responsibility for ensuring the use and of computing equipment has a minimal effect on the environment.

Nic O'Connor, channel manager at Acer SA, says a number of environmental concerns have come to the fore as a result of the increasingly widespread use of computer equipment over the past 30 years. This includes everything from PCs and servers through to monitor displays.

"Waste, pollution, energy efficiency and use of hazardous material are just some of the concerns that we need to address."

According to O'Connor, Acer is focusing on making its products more environmentally friendly by ensuring they are based on components that can be recycled, as well as eliminating hazardous substances in the process and improving power efficiency.

"Various restrictions have been imposed on the use of hazardous materials in the manufacture of electronic equipment by governing bodies such as the European Union,” he adds. “In addition, there are strict about how by-products from the manufacturing process are disposed of.”

O'Connor says a typical PC can waste more than 50% of the power it draws. “The energy is wasted as heat, which in turn increases the demand for energy to be used for cooling in the form of air conditioning units.

“For that reason, we are focusing on power management technologies as part of our green strategy."
