Acer WT 300: The TCO Buster

Acer today announced the upcoming launch of the WT 300 Windows-based terminal. The WT 300 provides commercial computing users with a distinct alternative to desktop PCs for networked Windows-environment applications. The WT 300 offers IT management, more than ever before, the opportunity for positive, worry-free and secure TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) control.

The Acer WT 300 owes a great deal of its ideal TCO solution to streamlined manageability. In the Acer WT 300 terminal server configuration, all applications and files reside on the server machine. File control, software installation/upgrade, and user management all take place on the server, eliminating the need to administer client machines. As well, it provides another layer of TCO management in its provision of the well-known and workable Windows environment, reducing the need for users to familiarize themselves with new operating systems. The WT 300`s most notable characteristic, however, is its Acer Smart Card hardware-level security control.

"The issue of Total Cost of Ownership is more important today than ever." said T.Y. Lay, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Acer92s Branded Business Unit "As more businesses are taking advantage of network and server technology, it`s incumbent upon us to create real, useable solutions to their TCO quandaries. The WT 300 provides IT management with a new and surprisingly simple way to meet the TCO challenge, head-on."

The WT 300 carries the MediaGX LV processor running at 200Mhz, and the Cx 5530 chipset, both from Cyrix. Utilizing one DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module), the WT 300 can support 16, 32, 64 of non-ECC RAM, and supports an onboard AMD AM79C973 10/100 Base T Ethernet interface.

The Smart Card, as part of the Acer SmartPack security administration utility, allows only users bearing the card (and possessing the correct PIN [Personal Identification Number]) to gain access to the server through the WT 300. The Smart Card contains the complete workings of a regular desktop PC, incorporating a CPU, RAM, ROM and EPROM into the card92s design. The SmartPack system allows administrators to fully program the Smart Card`s functionality, either for administrator or user clearance.

The WT 300 is preloaded with the Windows CE operating system. Layered over Windows CE are: the Acer-designed login shell, the Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) client and Microsoft92s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client software. The WT 30092s terminal server configuration can be based on a variety of systems. Currently Citrix WinFrame supports ICA clients for Windows NT Terminal Server Edition (TSE) version 3.51, and Citrix MetaFrame supports ICA under Windows NT version 4.0 TSE, Service Pack 4, and, in the future, under Windows 2000 Advanced Edition. Microsoft92s RDP is supported on Windows NT 4.0 TSE and will be supported in Windows NT 2000 Advanced Edition.

Operating either vertically or horizontally to optimize desktop space, the WT 30092s superior housing design presents a small footprint and minimalist desktop presence.
