Acer`s new high-end notebook

Johannesburg, 17 May 2004

The TravelMate 8000 is Acer`s newest high-performance, high-mobility and high-security notebook PC.

"The TravelMate 8000 notebook is driven by the latest mobile and wireless technologies from Intel and specifically designed for business professionals who constantly push the boundaries of their capabilities and demand the same from their mobile PC," says Acer`s commercial director, Gary De Menezes.

Key features of the TravelMate 8000 include: The latest Intel Centrino mobile technology; the ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 VGA card with 128MB of memory buffer; high-speed 54-Mbps 802.11g wireless transmission and Gigabit Ethernet; eight-hour whole-day battery life; and the DVD-Super Multi standard.

The latest Intel Centrino mobile technology, including the Intel Pentium M processor, the Intel 855GME chipset and the Intel 2200BG 802.11g wireless solution, ensures superior mobile performance.

The TravelMate 8000 now employs the Intel Pentium M processor at 1.5MHz or higher - and is geared for Dothan, Intel`s advanced 0.09u Pentium M processor with 2MB L2 cache, to be shipped in Q2 2004.

Crisp graphics are generated via the TravelMate 8000`s integrated ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 VGA card with 128MB of memory buffer. The notebook incorporates the world`s fastest mobile graphics chip, ensuring clear, flowing presentations, multimedia clips, movies and games.

The TravelMate 8000 also features a high-brightness, 200-nit 15-inch SXGA+ LCD screen with 1400 x 1050 pixel resolution, as well as the DVI (Digital Video Interface) standard for external LCD monitor use.

High-speed wireless connectivity anytime anywhere is made possible by the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG or 2100A Wi-Fi CERTIFIED network solution that provides 54-Mbps wireless transmission, while maintaining compatibility with the current 802.11g standard.

In addition to adopting the latest wireless solution, Acer has introduced SignalUp technology, which features a new antenna design that greatly enhances wireless performance. Wi-Fi and CCX validation offer further wireless compatibility and security.

Bluetooth is also an option; while built-in, lightning-quick Gigabit Ethernet makes the most of wired environments.

The power-saving Intel Centrino platform, along with Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, and ATI PowerPlay technology, allows continuous all-day operation.

Says De Menezes: "Five hours of energy is supplied with a single Li-ion battery pack - and, when supplemented by a secondary battery, the mobile PC`s battery life is boosted to an incredible eight hours or more."

Superior mobile operability comes via the TravelMate 8000`s stylishly trim, light 2-spindle design. In addition, with a hot-swappable DVD-Super Multi drive, the ultimate optical device compatible with all disc formats including CDR/RW, DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM, provides optimal easiness for burning DVDs.

The TravelMate 8000 is also equipped with a 4-in-1 card reader for convenient retrieval and exchange of files, pictures and video and serves as a space-saving desktop replacement when hooked up to the optional Acer EasyPort.

Security is ensured by the Acer SmartCard solution, which prevents unauthorised access to users` data by requiring a SmartCard and personal password.

"A total of five users, including the primary user, can be registered on one notebook under the smart card security system," says De Menezes.

"Acer offers a secondary smart card, which can be used either as an emergency card, or as a combined security measure for best protection and maximum use of the notebooks."
