The Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA), which celebrates its 50th birthday this year, named Adam Shapiro as KwaZulu-Natal's top IT person of the year and Derivco as the top company, at its annual dinner.

“We like to recognise and celebrate excellence by IT professionals and companies they work for,” said Chairman of the CSSA Carol Barraclough.

“We received many worthy nominations for both categories and criteria considered, including the contribution made to the local KZN industry. It was a very difficult decision to select one winner; however, the efforts made by Derivco to increase the skills levels of local programmers to be globally competitive were one of the deciding factors of it winning the Company of the Year award.

“And it was generally felt that Adam Shapiro had met the criteria best of all the nominees, most particularly that of 'catapulting' fledgling businesses into prominence through innovation and commitment by his company,” she said.

Judging includes a nomination and voting process by IT stakeholders throughout the province, via ITWeb - plus a review of all nominees, by a panel of CSSA KZN committee members.

The annual awards have been in existence for over a decade, and CSSA KZN, like the other chapters, has a responsibility to drive ICT practitioners toward excellence in their contributions.

About CSSA's birthday, Barraclough said: “Yes, there were computers 50 years ago! CSSA is recognised as one of an elite group of global IT professional bodies because it promotes a body of knowledge and code of conduct to which all members subscribe.”

Barraclough said CSSA saluted the Business Connexion team, which has sponsored it for so many years, proving that the company is a committed contributor to the profession.”

“We are a committed supporter and contributor to industry in which we conduct our business. We will continue to support the CSSA in its efforts to grow the industry in this region,” said Will Heygate, Regional Chief Executive: Business Connexion.
