Adaptec sells Snap Server

Data storage provider Adaptec sold its Snap Server networked and desktop storage appliances business to Overland Storage for $3.6 million, says CNNMoney.com.

Adaptec will retain ownership of all iSCSI-based hardware and software products and assets, which will be rebranded and managed by Adaptec.

"The sale of the Snap Server business allows us to focus on strengthening our leadership position in the unified serial RAID controller business, leverage our iSCSI assets and continue to streamline the company's operations," said S Sundaresh, president and CEO of Adaptec, in a statement.

Google on your TV

Internet giant Google has introduced a new service, Google Media Server, which connects PCs to TVs, says Pravda.

Google Media Server is a Windows application that finds photos, music and video files and makes them available to such devices as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and many PCs.

The server uses Google Desktop technology and Google Desktop Search to locate multimedia files.

Disagreement over Energy Star

In response to prompting from the US Congress, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is attempting to draft a new Energy Star specification for enterprise servers, but is having some problems agreeing on terms with the IT industry, says heise online.

AMD, Intel, IBM, Dell and Google have all responded to the EPA's already revised, first draft of the Energy Star specification for enterprise servers.

Not surprisingly, each company has its own agenda and there is little agreement in their responses. This harks back to the original Energy Star initiative, when critics said that industry lobbying was so successful that almost no changes were required to existing designs to meet the Energy Star criteria, as eventually published.
