More than 60 million mobile phone earpieces and headsets are expected to be sold worldwide in 2003. This is according to Logitech, a figure that is also supported by pan-European data estimating that 15% of mobile users purchase hands-free kits.
Logitech recently conducted the survey in 16 countries and found that almost 50% of users across Europe believe that using a headset may reduce the potential risk of radiation, compared to 25% who believe the opposite.
"These statistics clearly show that users are increasingly acknowledging the importance of mobile accessories, whether it is for health reasons or enhanced usability," comments Mireille Davidson, sales and marketing manager for Logitech SA.
The study also showed a close link between time spent on a mobile phone and the use of a headset or earpiece. Some 67% of those who spend more than two hours per day on their cellphones use a headset at least some of the time. While only 36% of users - spending less than 10 minutes a day on their phones - use headsets.
Says Davidson: "What is also interesting to note is that irrespective of the time spent on the phone, over half the users indicated that they would recommend a headset to their loved ones or family - a trend that is mirrored in SA."
Inconvenience was according to all users the main reason for not using headsets.
"We hope to remove this major obstacle with the introduction of our new range of headsets, designed to fit almost any ear, covering both and corded and cordless products," she concludes.
