Advent of third cell operator benefits Grintek

Grintek Power Technologies has almost tripled sales of its direct-current power solutions to the telecommunications industry, and is benefiting from the introduction of a third cellular operator.

Sales of Grintek`s DC power solutions to the industry has increased to R67 million this year, from R23 million last year.

The company, part of JSE-listed Grintek`s Grintek Electronics division, has new business from Siemens Telecommunications, with a potential value of R60 million, for DC power equipment used in its roll-out of the Cell C network.

Grintek Electronics is the division which applies the Grintek group`s core technologies in the commercial and industrial markets.

"As we will also be supplying DC power solutions to Siemens Telecommunications for their roll-outs into Africa, this agreement with Siemens has been the single biggest growth and success in the business unit during the last year," says Grintek Electronics MD Gavin Swanepoel.

"Growth of the Cell C network and our existing long-term supply agreements with other major telecommunications companies in the region should result in more than 10 000 DC power modules being produced over the next three years," he adds.

"Our decision to strategically position the business as a provider of total DC power solutions has paid off and has seen us capitalising on our investment in new intellectual property obtained through the exclusive licence manufacturing agreement with our Australian technology partner, Rectifier Technologies Pacific."

Swanepoel says the business`s products have gained significant market share, with more than 500 systems manufactured and delivered last year.

Future production is projected at more than five times that number over the next three years.
