Wireless Internet service providers Aerosat and Amobia Communications will merge in a deal that comes into effect on Monday.

According to a statement, the combination of the two companies “represents a pooling of the expertise of two major wireless Internet service providers (WISPs)”. Amobia says the deal is a bid to create a national footprint for its service offering, as well as extend its product range.

The new entity, to be known as Amobia Communications, will become one of the biggest WISPs in the country, it says. The merger aims to enhance its future growth and provide cost-effective connectivity solutions to the consumer.

Amobia Communications, founded in 2005, is an independent network infrastructure provider. It builds outdoor networks, and focuses on corporate branch connectivity solutions and high-speed point-to-point links.

Its consumer offerings include wireless Internet access and WiFi hotspots, while voice solutions are in beta phase and set to launch soon.

Aerosat was established in June 2003, in Port Elizabeth, as an independent network infrastructure provider.

Since then, it has added to its portfolio to offer a variety of development, Internet and connectivity services, virtual private networking, network and consulting, Linux systems support services, Web and domain hosting and Web site design.

It has expanded through independent franchises, into areas including East London, Jeffrey's Bay, Somerset East and the Northern Cape.
