Communications minister Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri is among scores of African government and private sector delegates attending a conference in Mali, ahead of next year`s World Summit on Information Society.
The three-day African conference in Bamako is one of a series of regional conferences intended to assess key regional challenges and formulate common regional objectives ahead of the World Summit.
The Bamako conference, under the auspices of Mali president Alpha Oumar Kanore, is using the African Information Society Initiative launched in 1996 as a basis for discussions.
Themes to be covered in the conference and its workshops include national information and communications infrastructure strategies in Africa, African languages and the Internet, ICT financing mechanisms, the Internet and the law, and analysis of the impact of ICT on Africa.
The World Summit on Information Society, to be held in Geneva next year, is expected to adopt a declaration of principles and an action plan to facilitate the growth of the Information Society and to help bridge the digital divide.
