Africa's first CDCE course and TIA-942 training a great success

The first Certified Data Centre Expert (CDCE) training course on African soil was delivered in Johannesburg during December 2013.

To mark this occasion, the delegates were personally congratulated by the EPI CEO, the licence holder of the training course, during his visit to South Africa in August 2014. In further news, the launch of CTDC (Certified TIA-942 Design Consultant) and CTIA (Certified TIA-942 Internal Auditor) on African soil took place in August this year and was a resounding success.

The first Certified Data Centre Expert (CDCE) training course was delivered on African soil during the week of 2 to 6 December 2013. The class consisted of only three delegates and Lee Smith, a certified CDCE instructor, delivered the course. It was an intense five days of hands-on training where the course delegates were exposed to various aspects of the entire data centre life cycle, being design, implementation, operations and retirement.

The course attendees conducted numerous in-class exercises which exposed them to numerous aspects of what is involved in programme managing a data centre project from design right through to retirement.

As this was the first CDCE course on African soil, Edward van Leent, CEO and Chairman of EPI, congratulated each new CDCE personally during his recent visit to Johannesburg. "This is a milestone for the African data centre profession," Van Leent said. "It is testimony to the commitment of those who want to raise themselves to the highest levels of our profession through this formalised training and international recognition."

Dee Smith and Associates, the company that delivered the first CDCE course on African soil, is proud to be associated with these newly accredited professionals. We congratulate them on their achievement and we wish them all the best in their future careers.

The next CDCE course is scheduled for the week of 1 to 5 December 2014 and there are still seats available. To attend this course, delegates must have a CDCS accreditation that had not expired prior to 1 August 2014. Africa's first CTDC and CTIA training courses are a resounding success

Earlier this year, we announced the launch of new CTDC (Certified TIA-942 Design Consultant) and CTIA (Certified TIA-942 Internal Auditor) courses on African soil. The launch for these two certification courses, which are based on the ANSI/TIA-942 Data Centre Design Standard, was concluded during the week of 18 to 22 August. Delegates were offered the opportunity to learn more about the actual TIA-942 Standard and to be of the first on the African continent to obtain these accreditations.

Edward van Leent, the CEO and chairperson of EPI, personally flew to Johannesburg and delivered both courses. His direct involvement added to the special nature of this event. Van Leent is the principle author of the new course material and he is a member of the ANSI/TIA-942 technical committee. The opportunity for each and every course delegate to interact with somebody who is at the forefront of TIA-based data centre certification and audits was an invaluable benefit to all.

All 13 CTDC attendees were thoroughly put through their paces. The exam is of a high standard and delegates must score a minimum of 83% in order to obtain the coveted and internationally recognised CTDC accreditation. Less than 40% of the class was successful in their first attempt which is testimony to the level of in-depth knowledge of the TIA-942 Standard required to obtain this accreditation. We are proud to announce that all attendees passed their re-examinations and are now CTDC certified. All 13 individuals are now part of an elite group and the only such certified on the African continent. Eight delegates continued and successfully completed the CTIA course as well.

The companies that realised the value of this training and sent delegates to attend were: BCX, Claassen-Auret, EOH, Eskom, Ingenium Engineers, Merqu Communications, MTN, Standard Bank, TPS Consulting Engineers.

The next CTDC and CTIA training is scheduled for the week of 16 to 20 March 2015 and will again be delivered in Johannesburg, South Africa. Van Leent has agreed to deliver the training, which will be great benefit to anyone who attends. A number of inquiries for both these courses have already been received. Delegates who wish to attend must hold, at the minimum, a valid CDCP accreditation (CDCS and CDCE are also accepted) or an alternative recognised equivalent. Organisations or individuals who wish to know more about this training and all the other courses and services that we offer can contact us at info@deesmith.co.za or visit our Web site at www.deesmith.co.za.
