To help businesses more quickly deliver stable software environments, Altiris now offers application packaging services at its new software factory based in Tallinn, Estonia. The factory consists of a team of engineers who specialise in Microsoft Windows Installer (.MSI) technology and Windows application packaging. The packaging service aims to provide a rapid, reliable and economical means to outsource software packaging. The Altiris 'near-shore' model uses highly skilled packaging professionals for global software readiness projects.
Factory engineers will utilise a new version of Wise Package Studio which includes support for the creation and editing of application packages running in Windows Vista and 64-bit Windows operating environments. Applications prepared with Wise Package Studio can realise the benefits of application virtualisation to help improve software reliability and flexibility.
Eurostar, the high-speed passenger train operator between London and Paris/Brussels, used Wise Package Studio to create Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) packages before deploying applications into the production environment. Wise Package Studio was integral to the project as it enabled the team to gain control of its applications, and conform to corporate standards. Tony Longhurst, Eurostar general manager of IS technical architecture, said, "We didn't operate in a packaged application environment until we revisited the Altiris implementation. The use of Wise Package Studio for application packaging was a natural choice given its native integration with other Altiris software management solutions."
