Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (AMD) today announced the AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor has been selected by AMX Corporation to power its Modero family of innovative Touch Panels.

The 7.5- and 8.4-inch Modero ViewPoint Touch Panels and 7-inch Modero Widescreen Touch Panel provide one-touch automated control to simplify the automation and integration of audio/video, environmental and communications technology.

AMX Modero ViewPoint and Modero Widescreen touch panels are designed to seamlessly enable centralized control and automation in almost any environment, making the operation of complex equipment straightforward and convenient. Users have the ability to take instant command over many types of integrated equipment -- from projectors, audio/video and window treatments to security, lighting and PCs. The AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor offers a number of benefits to AMX, most notably extended system battery life based on the processor`s low-power capabilities, consuming only 250mW of power at 400MHz.

AMX leverages the high-performance, low-power features of the processor to create an intuitive interface that includes G4 graphics, rich colour display and pinpoint on-screen clarity.

Selected in part for its on-chip LCD controller, the Au1100 processor enables unique graphical features including a high-resolution panel colour. All of the Modero Touch Panel products allow the user to create icons that flip, spin, morph and expand at the touch of a screen, as well as the ability to listen to MP3 and WAV audio files.

"When looking for an embedded processor that would meet all our needs, the AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor was the natural choice, particularly with its extended peripheral set," said Peter Nohren, AMX vice-president, engineering. "It provides the features and functionality that meet the demands of our customers, including ease-of-integration, high-performance and low-power, all delivered on a small form factor."

The entire Modero line can be customised to meet the needs of the customer, whether it is wireless mobility, wall mount or tabletop installation, or G4 computer control, which extends remote access and control of a networked computer directly to the interface. The independent SDRAM and static RAM busses used in the Au1100 processor allowed AMX to actualise greater functionality. These features enable greater off-chip data movement speeds, which are critically important to the graphical movement features offered by AMX.

"We work with our customers to help foster innovation by delivering complete solutions that are designed to meet their processing needs for high-integration, high-performance and low-power," said Phil Pompa, AMD`s vice president of marketing for the Personal Connectivity Solutions group. "AMX is leveraging the performance and power benefits provided by the Au1100 processor, creating an innovative product that can extend the benefits of one-point control into the home and business."

The Au1100 processor will be featured at Embedded Technology 2003, 12 to 14 November 2003, in Yokohama, Japan. The AMX Modero Touch Panels will be showcased at the Electronic House Expo, 10 to 13 November 2003, in Long Beach, California.

The AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor

The AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor is a System-on-a-Chip (SOC) based on the MIPS32 instruction set and includes an enhanced, custom CPU core, customised memory controller and a set of industry standard communication peripherals.

These integrated peripherals include one 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB Host and Device controller, LCD controller PCMCIA/Compact Flash interface, IrDA controller, AC97 interface (external CODEC required), two Secure Digital (SD) controllers, three UART`s, two SSI controllers, EJTAG, and 48 General Purpose I/O (GPIO) pins.

Of special note, the Au1100 processor`s LCD controller enables high-quality graphics and video on mobile information appliances. The LCD controller is designed to drive single and dual panel colour, TFT and STN displays up to 640x480 (VGA) or 800x600 (SVGA) at 16bpp supported through a unified SDRAM-based frame buffer. The LCD controller also features a display rotate for portrait-vs-landscape formatting of images.

Combining high performance, low power and numerous peripherals makes the Au1100 processor ideally suited for battery powered, performance-demanding applications.

The Au1100 processor development boards and BSPs for Windows CE.NET and Linux are available today.
