AMD announces three mobile CPUs

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced three mobile Athlon XP-M (desktop replacement) processors, taking the performance of its mobile Athlon line to a performance rating of 2800+. AMD also announced two low-power versions of the Athlon XP-M, at 1900+ and 2000+ speed grades.

According to Extreme Tech, all the new processors contain 512KB of level-2 cache. Fujitsu PC Corporation will use the low-voltage Athlon XP-M to power its LifeBook S2000 chip. Other PC manufacturers will offer notebooks using the new chip later this year, AMD said.

The new low-voltage mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processors at 2000+ and 1900+ speed grades are priced at $134 and $123, respectively. The mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2800+ for desktop replacement notebooks is priced at $230, in lots of 1 000 pieces. All three chips are currently shipping.

Nokia delivers dual-mode phones

Nokia has started commercial deliveries of "the world`s first dual-mode 3GPP compliant GSM/WCDMA mobile phone, capable of seamless handovers between GSM and WCDMA networks".

The Nokia 6650 phone is destined for the European, Asian and Japanese markets, where mobile operators are rolling out 3G (third-generation) services. Operators will provide the Nokia 6650 as a standard GSM phone, a WCDMA phone or a dual-mode GSM/WCDMA phone, depending on network architecture.

Consumers will have global roaming on all GSM900/1800 and WCDMA networks in Japan and Europe. Operators building WCDMA coverage to complement existing GSM900/1800 coverage can now offer high speed services of up to 384kbps with WCDMA, while having full GSM900/1800 coverage.

Consumers are already using a number of 3G services in current networks: multimedia messaging, various types of downloading, sending and receiving videos.
