"The number of requests for proposals and requests for information we have received from developing countries looking for equipment for connectivity and education has been quite astounding," Gustavo Arenas, AMD`s corporate VP and GM, high-growth markets region, said at a dinner he hosted in Cape Town yesterday.

Arenas was speaking ahead of the World Economic Forum on Africa 2006 summit that starts in Cape Town today and continues until the end of the week.

"We really want to play a role in ensuring the benefits of technology reach those who do not have it," he said.

Arenas spoke about other initiatives AMD is examining for emerging high-growth markets. This includes the Portable Internet Connect (PIC), a robust basic personal computer with a small keyboard, mouse and screen that can connect to the Internet by using either wired or wireless connectivity.

"There is already one school near Johannesburg where we have installed these and three resellers have been appointed in SA," he said.
