Newly-appointed country representative for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in SA, Jaco Laubscher, hopes to bring the basics of the business up to scratch in the local market.
Laubscher was appointed to manage the brand locally when the company closed its local office two months ago.
He says there have been challenges getting going, including the lack of stock with certain distributors, while the company found a replacement for former country head Imi Mosaheb.
However, he says these troubles are being ironed out fairly well and he is ready to get the other basics into place. He will spend the next few weeks consolidating the company's relationship with its distributors and will hopefully bolster the available products on offer locally, Laubscher adds.
The company is looking towards two new segments of the market that it had previously struggled to maintain in SA. Laubscher says he will begin to shift focus to the midrange and consumer market.
AMD has traditionally had a strong presence in the gaming community and in some of the higher-end graphics organisations. However, the company has battled to corner the general consumer and midrange PC users.
Despite this, Laubscher says he is determined to make a success of the AMD brand in the local market. He adds that he has already started to strengthen ties with the retail market, including Incredible Connection and others, which he cannot yet name.
The company will release several new technologies over the next few months leading up to the Christmas period. This weekend's gaming expo, Rage, will see the company discuss the new features of DirectX 11, which it has been tasked to release.
It will also bring in a number of new chips, including the Athlone X4 (quad core), which will be brought to market at less than R900.
