AMD to challenge Intel onslaught?
One of the first things the new CEO of AMD will have to tackle is the chipmaker's standing in the server processor race, according to Seeking Alpha.
As AMD reported its fourth quarter results - the company reported an in line quarter with better-than-expected earnings of 14 cents a share on revenue of $1.65 billion - it became clear that Intel put the hurt on its smaller rival in the data centre.
Analysts noted that AMD had trouble maintaining average selling prices for server chips. Intel's quarter was powered by server processor pricing.
Unix servers lose market share
Australia has led the charge in x86 server adoption, with Unix servers losing significant market share to their cheaper counterparts during 2010, according to analysts, writes CIO Australia.
Statistics from market research firm Gartner indicate Reduced Instruct Set Computing and Itanium-based Unix units dropped in local market share by 22% in the third quarter compared to the same quarter in 2009.
Worldwide, Unix server market share declined by 9.5% while overall shipments declined by 10%. On a global level, shipments of x86 servers went up 14.9% during the third quarter.
Sinology readies NAS server
Next month Sinology will expand its storage offering by rolling out the DiskStation DS411slim, a compact NAS server that is pre-loaded with DiskStation Manager 3.0 and can house four 2.5-inch SATA hard drives, solid state drives or hybrid hard drives, says Tech Connect.
The new NAS packs a 1.6 GHz processor, 256MB of DDR3 memory, it supports up to 4TB of storage, can be set up as a DLNA media server, and includes one Gigabit port, and one eSATA, plus two USB 2.0 connectors.
The DS411slim's pricing was not revealed.
