AMD unveils Opteron
AMD has made available its 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, says Hardwarezone.
The new server processor delivers up to 35% more performance with up to a 35% decrease in power consumption when idle.
With IT decision-makers looking to do more with less, Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors can help drive data centre efficiencies and reduce complexities, with innovations that offer superior virtualisation performance and increased performance-per-watt.
Companies enable benchmarking solutions
AMD and Dell have enabled Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor-based benchmarking solutions at the Steinbuch Centre SCC for Computing, in Germany, reports Hartware.de.
Customers will now be able to test their specific high-performance computing (HPC) applications free of charge on the latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron Model 2384 processors.
These processors are part of the product line code-named Shanghai. The new benchmarking cluster helps HPC customers to identify ideal server configurations tailored to their specific needs before making a buying decision.
Intel introduces Xeon processors
Intel plans to launch its next-generation Xeon processors, based on Nehalem micro-architecture, sometime in Q1 2009, states Xbitlabs.
The new chips will be priced aggressively, even though their release in the first quarter may not be a significant event, since server and workstation buyers are unlikely to buy a lot of new equipment in Q1, the company says.
The new family of Intel Xeon processors will be broad - 15 different models - and aimed at different markets.
