AMD unveils Opterons

AMD South Africa has recently unveiled its Opteron HE range of energy-efficient server processors.

Aimed directly at the processor-intensive centre environment, the new 45nm Quad-core Opteron HE chips are designed to perform at the lower 55W ACP range, meaning improved performance at a lower power cost. They run at speeds ranging from 2.1GHz to 2.3GHz.

“In today's cost- and power-conscious data centre environments, the challenge is on IT managers to increase performance while simultaneously lowering costs and energy requirements,” says Imi Mosaheb, AMD's country manager for SA. “South African IT environments are especially in need thanks to ongoing power issues and the ever-fluctuating exchange rate.”

Re-architecting is not always the best solution, and local IT managers should instead look at doing more, with less, he says.

AMD's new Opteron HE processor series claims to offer just that, the ability to improve either the power consumption of a data centre for the same performance, or to raise its overall processing power while maintaining a constant power draw.

AMD HP already has eight server configurations outfitted with Opteron HE chips, with global OEMs Dell, IBM and Sun Microsystems releasing their own solutions later this quarter.
