AMD updates Bulldozer architecture

V3.co.uk reports.

The Opteron 6200 Interlagos and 4200 Valencia processors target the enterprise server market with configurations ranging from two- to four-socket servers, and offer four-, eight- and 16-core variants.

The chips are AMD's first server processors to use the Bulldozer micro-architecture. Described by the company as a “revolutionary” update, the Bulldozer chips feature improved handling or processor cores and better allocation of power.

“Our industry is at a new juncture; virtualisation has provided a new level of reliable consolidation and businesses are now looking to the cloud for even more agility and efficiency,” says Paul Struhsaker, corporate VP and GM, AMD commercial business, TMCnet writes.

“We designed the new AMD Opteron processor for this precise moment. The wait for the most anticipated new product and architecture for servers is over. Leading OEMs are now offering cloud, enterprise and HPC customers a full suite of solutions based on the industry's most comprehensive server processor portfolio, the new AMD Opteron family of processors, which deliver an inspired balance of performance, scalability and efficiency,” he adds.

According to TechEye, Sunnyvale's number one chip company also plans to introduce the Opteron 3000 series, which is aimed squarely at the low-power server and micro-server markets.

AMD is trying to nibble on Intel's ankle, claiming its new lines offer “89% greater performance” than the “most popular server processor from the competition at the same price”.
