Amdahl boosts open systems storage to 7,3 Terabytes

Johannesburg, 27 Sep 2000

Amdahl, owned and merketed in South Africa by CCH Enterprise Solutions, has announced significant enhancements to the LVSTM 4800 storage system including high-capacity 73GB drives, a doubling of performance of the back-end disk pathing, and advanced features that provide customers with a more agile storage environment.

A major increase in throughput has also been achieved by a move to 80 MB/sec back-end paths. With this extension, each LVS 4800 module now has 480 MB/sec of back-end that can sustain application streams of nearly 200 MB/sec. Multiple modules can be configured to support the even higher throughput requirements of data warehousing, streaming media, and e-commerce applications, says Albert Teirlinck, Amdahl product manager at CCH Enterprise Solutions.

"Users need flexibility," says Teirlinck. "As their storage requirements change, they can choose from a combination of drive sizes and Raid organisations to meet their needs."

Other enhancements include an internal partitioning feature, extended facilities, and a new centralised management tool - the Java-based Amdahl Storage Manager - that allows the user to select the correct options for each application.

Together, these facilities create a more agile customer environment, reduce cost of ownership, and protect customers` previous investment.

Teirlinck adds: "The Amdahl Storage Manager tool allows storage management of all LVS 4800 modules to be centralised, wherever they may be located. Adaptability and ease-of-use management tools are key to this market."
