Amdahl uses SAN to provide storage for OS/390, Unix and NT

Johannesburg, 12 Apr 2000

CCH Enterprise Solutions has announced that Amdahl`s Platinum/400 Raid storage subsystem now attaches to open systems Unix and Windows NT platforms, via a storage area (SAN) environment, in addition to the System/390 platform, which Amdahl has historically supported.

Platinum/400 connects to Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX to allow companies to share the same storage platform for a diversity of uses and to build a single connecting infrastructure.

"Customers can achieve efficient information management, improved access, and lower cost of ownership," says Don Smith, managing director for Amdahl at CCH Enterprise Solutions. "Many of our customers are putting special emphasis on storage solutions as they develop strategies that put storage in the center of their IT infrastructure. They are looking at ways to their entire IT infrastructure as a single entity, regardless of platform. The new SAN-attachable Platinum/400 has been made with this in mind. We help our customers create seamless and scalable SANs for the entire enterprise."

Platinum/400 allows both SCSI or fibre channel attachment using a variety of hubs and switches from vendors, such as Brocade Communications Systems, a provider of scalable, reliable infrastructures for SANs.

Platinum Backup eXpress provides the capability to back up storage from the open systems platform to the enterprise mainframe to use System/390 resources and procedures.

STARmanager and SUNRISE software products from Amdahl monitor recoverability status of multi-tier applications, provide a centralised repository for backup of distributed data, and ensure the integrity of recovered applications.
